Volvo C40 Model Year 2022.

17 June 2021

The Volvo C40 Recharge is the first Volvo model in the company’s history to be designed as pure electric only. The C40 Recharge is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), an advanced vehicle platform co-developed within the Geely Group which provides Volvo with the necessary economies of scale for this segment.

The C40 Recharge has all the benefits of an SUV but with a lower and sleeker design featuring improved aerodynamics. It features a striking rear-end design to go with this lower roofline, while the new front design introduces a new face for electric Volvos and includes headlights with state-of-the-art pixel technology.

Inside, the C40 Recharge offers the high seating position that most Volvo drivers prefer, and is available in colour and decor options unique to the model. It is also the first Volvo model with a completely leather-free interior.

All orders for the fully electric C40 Recharge will be placed via volvocars.com. In line with its ambition to reduce complexity and focus on attractive pre-selected variants, Volvo Cars has drastically simplified the consumer offering of the C40 Recharge. When customers get a new C40 Recharge, it will come with a convenient care package that offers service, warranty, roadside assistance, as well as insurance and home charging options*.

Connectivity and infotainment.

Like the XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge comes with one of the best infotainment systems on the market, jointly developed with Google and based on the Android operating system. It provides consumers with Google apps and services built-in, such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store*.

Unlimited data enables superior connectivity and the C40 Recharge will receive software updates over the air. This means it will continue to improve over time after it has left the factory, keeping continuously up to date with the latest technology.

Powertrain technology.

The C40 Recharge comes with twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast-charged to 10-80 per cent in less than 40 minutes**. It offers a certified range of around 420 km***.

More details around the powertrain offer can be found in the technical specifications.

Safety and driver assistance

With the weight of 500kg for the high voltage battery and the absence of a combustion engine, the C40 Recharge’s body structure is designed to absorb even more crash energy than an equivalent car with an internal combustion engine.

The battery is protected by a safety cage, which consists of a frame of extruded aluminium and has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around it. The battery’s placement on the floor of the car also has the benefit of lowering the centre of gravity of the car, for better protection against roll-overs.

At the rear, the electric powertrain has been integrated in the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin.

The C40 Recharge is also equipped with Volvo Cars’ latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS); a modern, scalable active safety system that consists of an array of radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors.

* Described features might be optional. Vehicle specifications and the exact customer offer may vary from one country to another, or not (yet) be available in all markets.

** Charging times are dependent on factors such as outdoor temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition, and car condition.

*** The range according to the realistic WLTP driving cycle under controlled conditions for a new car. The real-world range may vary, and could be improved via coming over-the-air software updates.. Figures are based on preliminary target. Final vehicle certification pending.
