Two new 1.6-litre engines, one petrol and one diesel, have been added to the new Volvo S40 saloon range. They offer excellent fuel economy and particularly affordable Volvo ownership, with prices starting from £15,298 and £16,568 respectively.

The new Volvo S40 compact saloon made its UK showroom debut in early 2004, starting with the 2.0-litre turbodiesel plus the five-cylinder T5 and 2.4i petrol units.

Since then, the range has expanded with the addition of a 1.8-litre petrol – and now the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel.

Both the new 1.6-litre engines are modern four-cylinder units offering power, refinement and economy.

The 1.6 petrol is a lightweight aluminium unit with fuel injection and a five-speed manual gearbox to help it obtain fuel economy of 39.2 mpg on the Combined cycle with low emissions of 171 g/km and group C VED.

The 1.6 diesel is turbocharged with variable turbo geometry and common rail fuel injection with a lightweight aluminium block and head. It generates 110 bhp with 0-62 mph in 12.0 seconds, and can achieve 57.6 mpg on the Combined cycle.

Production of both engines started earlier this month, with first deliveries to customers expected in January 2005.
