MY02
Volvo will be introducing new features, models, and revise model content to augment our current V70 offer and to help maintain our leadership role in the segment. A strong emphasis was also placed on aligning our option package across the model line in name and content to simplify the offer for both customer and retailer. Below you will find "What's New" with the V70 for MY02. V70 AWD Beginning in MY02, Volvo will introduce All Wheel Drive (AWD) on the V70 as a Customer Order Only. It is an accommodation for those customers who enjoy the clean lines of a V70, yet want the added safety and traction benefits of AWD.  | | THOR - OPTION |  | | ORBIT - STD | - The AWD system employed on the V70 AWD will be the same as that on the Cross Country.
Under normal road conditions the system will split the power in a 95/5 front to rear ratio. Power, upon demand, will transfer to the rear axle via a viscous clutch. The transfer in this system is transparent to the customer and their awareness that the system is operating is only from the light in the instrument cluster. - The AWD system has been supplemented with four wheel TRACS. Unlike its predecessor that used a locking rear differential to control rear wheel spin, TRACS is used to modulate the ABS braking system when wheel spin is detected through the ABS sensors. So, if the right set of wheels begins to lose traction, those wheels will be braked to recover traction while the left set of wheels propels the vehicle. Activation of 4-Wheel TRACS occurs from starting speeds up to 25 MPH. The advantage in this system is the intervention of 4-Wheel TRACS is very balanced.
- Ground clearance is slightly increased by 0.5 inches over the V70.
- 5 speed Automatic with Geartronic will be standard for the V70 AWD, as it is on the Cross Country.
- The V70 AWD will feature exclusive 16" (ORBIT - Standard) and 17" (THOR - Option) Wheels to help distinguish it from the other V70s.
Platform Introductions - Improved throttle management for 5 cylinder turbos. The V70 will be discernibly more responsive when the accelerator is depressed which enhance the level of driving pleasure. The function is designed in a way that the driving is smooth without sac-rificing low speed performance.
Mk 25 Brake System - STC Improvements – improved engine intervention due to a more powerful processor and new algorithms
- Traction Control in STC and TRACS has been improved by increasing the speed range of the system. It will regulate the system up to 75 MPH (previously 44 MPH) but has to enter the traction control mode at a speed lower than 25 MPH.
- DSTC availability with AWD – Available Dec. 10th / W150 Production
- Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA) – dramatically reduces stopping distances in panic situations. At these critical moments, there is sometimes the tendency to relax pressure off the brake pedal once ABS modulation occurs. EBA ensures that full brak-ing power is applied.
Packages As stated above, V70 packages have been revised to align more closely with the content and nomenclature of the rest of the Volvo lineup. The benefit of this rationalization is to provide product continuity between models and the enhancement of communication between the retailer and customer. As such, two new packages have been developed using similar logic in content with the S60. - Premium Package: Consists of high customer demand features of Leather Upholstery, Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel, Simulated Wood Inlays, In-dash CD Player, Power Seat (Driver-2.4; Passenger-2.4T/AWD)
Note: Sunroof is included in the package for 2.4 models only. - Versatility Package: Consists of the 3rd Row Seat, Integrated Booster, Foldable Table, and Trash Bin.

Sunroof: To alleviate customer and dealer confusion, beginning from start of production, Sunroof will now be standard on all 2.4T, 2.4T AWD & T5 variants. The Premium Packages have been adjusted to reflect this change. The sunroof will continue to be an option (and included in the premium package) on the 2.4
In addition to the above additions to the standard content, two items were removed and have been offered in option packages. They are:
- Dash Cupholder deleted as standard equipment – Added to Touring Package
- Rear Trash Bin deleted as standard equipment – Added to Versatility Package
New Feature Introductions
DVD Volvo Navigation System
- The Volvo Navigation System made its debut in the MY99 S80, and since it has been incorporated on most P2 vehicles. While a convenient and worthwhile option for many, improvements have been made to the CD-based system to improve customer satisfaction and ease of operation.
- The Volvo Navigation System (VNS) is an electronic information and route guidance system that helps the driver find any destination under a variety of options (e.g. shortest route, fastest time, use of highways and toll roads). The system keeps track of the posi-tion of the vehicle using the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system and automatically recalculates the route if the driver goes off the system’s plan.
- The most significant improvement of VNS was the incorporation of DVD media. The previous generation VNS used CD-ROM media to store maps and data. The advan-tages of using DVD media are storage capacity and speed. CD-ROM based VNS would require 9 separate CDs to provide coverage in the continental United States, whereas with the DVD format, only one disc is necessary for the United States and Canada.
- Route calculation, Data retrieval, and rerouting speeds are significantly enhanced ver-sus the CD-ROM system.
- The size of the VNS display has increased by 1", measuring 6.5 inches. This color, wide screen unit is situated at eye level so it can be read easily and quickly. When not is use the display hides discretely inside the center speaker on the dashboard.
- In addition to the steering wheel mounted controls, a hand held remote will be included with every VNS ordered as a factory option. This remote allows passengers access to the system without having to distract the driver.
Premium Sound System Upgrade (Option) - As a factory or retailer installed option, the V70 T5and XC will receive the Audio Max system found on the S60. This represents a larger, external amplifier (4x75W vs. 4x50W); the premium speakers found on the S60; and the front door speaker arrangement (3 speakers vs. 2). As such, T5s ordered with the Audio Max System will have a different door panel (c/o the S60).

- Interior Switch for Fuel Lid – An interior switch will be added to 2.4T, AWD, and T5 models. Eventually, 2.4 models will receive switch as a running change this year. The switch turns off a diagnostic system that detects evaporation of fuel vapor. It is expected that this switch will help mitigate false reads and incorrect illumination of check engine lights. The fuel lid will automatically relock should the vehicle exceed 4 MPH.
