MY02 Model
S60 2.4T AWD - With the introduction of the Electronically Controlled AWD, Volvo takes the next step in safety leadership. The electronically controlled system, developed with another Swedish company Haldex, opens up a host of new opportunities, including the addition of STC – and later DSTC. The electronic version of AWD will also presents Volvo the opportunity to expand beyond 2.4T to other variants and platforms in the future (the PCC which debuted last year utilizes the same system).
- The 2.4T AWD addresses all of the top reasons for purchase and will be positioned in the marketplace as Safety with Security, Peace of Mind and Dynamic Handling Characteristics, for those times when you need it most.
- The AWD sedan market continues to develop quickly and is a natural for Volvo to expand on the already extremely well received S60. Built in Ghent (along with all N.A. S60s) and available from production start, the S60 2.4T AWD features all of the 2.4T options and packages, with these upgrades:
- Exclusive Alloy Wheels: 16” ORBIT (Std.) and 17” THOR (Opt.)
- Electronically Controlled AWD
- Geartronic
- S60 AWD Emblem
- Increased chassis height (Front/Rear) 0.6 in. / 1.4 in.
Electronically Controlled AWD - The major component of the Electronically Controlled AWD is the automatic clutch. The clutch utilizes an electronic management system and comprises of three functional parts:
- The hydraulic pump driven by the slip between the axles wheels
- The Wet Multi-plate Clutch
- The control valve with its electronics
- Inputs that control the clutch: speed of the wheels–signals from ABS sensors; throttle position; engine torque; engine speed; brake system.
- The automatic clutch is fully compatible with the ABS without freewheel or additional clutches. It connects to the vehicles electrical system and to the CAN system without the need for additional sensors.
- The unit can be viewed as a hydraulic pump, where the housing and an annular piston are connected to one shaft while the piston actuator is connected to the other (input and output).
- When speed differences occur between shafts, the hydraulic pistons begin pumping and oil flow (pressure) starts. As a piston pumps, there is virtually instant reaction with no low-speed pumping loss. The oil flows to a clutch piston, compressing the clutch pack to brake the speed differences. An electronically controlled valve regulates the oil pressure and the force on the clutch pack. The automatic clutch begins to transfer torque after a wheel angle rotation of about 10 degrees. This ensures rapid engagement of the AWD unit making it completely transparent to the customer.
- Advantages of the Electronically Controlled AWD:
 |  | - The system can accommodate wheels with different diameters, incase a temporary spare needs to be utilized. Also, a vehicle can be towed with one axle lifted as the clutch is in the "disengaged mode" (no power to the system) when the ignition key is in position 1.
- Enhanced occupant and vehicle safety: Electronically Controlled AWD is fully integrated with the brake and stability systems (STC, DSTC-W150 Production). This is made possible because the automatic clutch can be disengaged during parking maneuvers and braking. This system can be disengaged in less than 60 mille seconds when braking, which is essential to ensure vehicle stability.
- Full AWD function when the transmission is in reverse.
- Transparent actuation of the AWD, with rapid activation and deactivation when needed providing optimal traction, especially during acceleration. Virtually no ill effects of 'wind-up' are discernable during tight cornering and when executing parking maneuvers.
- Weight reduction and reduced fuel consumption are the results of the complete design of the AWD driveline. The S60 AWD weights only an additional 62 kg / 137 lbs.
Platform Introductions
- Improved throttle management for 5 cylinder turbos. The S60 will be discernibly more responsive when the accelerator is depressed which enhance the level of driving pleasure. The function is designed in a way that the driving is smooth without sacrificing low speed performance.
- Emergency Trunk Release – A bright yellow plastic handle with cord attached to the locking mechanism will be installed in every sedan to allow for easy release of the trunk lid in case of entrapment.
Mk 25 Brake System
- STC Improvements – improved engine intervention due to a more powerful processor and new algorithms (STC is now standard on 2.4, 2.4T)
- Traction Control in STC and TRACS has been improved by increasing the speed range of the system. It will regulate the system up to 75 MPH (previously 44 MPH) but has to enter the traction control mode at a speed lower than 25 MPH.
- DSTC availability with AWD – Available Dec. 10th / W150 Production
- Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA) – dramatically reduces stopping distances in panic situations. At these critical moments, there is sometimes the tendency to relax pressure off the brake pedal once ABS modulation occurs. EBA ensures that full braking power is applied.
Packages and Standard Content: - Standardized safety features and options: It is natural for Volvo to build on and take the lead in our acknowledged safety leadership. As such standard content on all variants includes a minimum of STC (Except T5 which receives DSTC)
- Sunroof: To alleviate customer and dealer confusion, beginning from start of production, Sunroof will now be standard on all 2.4T, 2.4T AWD & T5 variants. The Premium Packages have been adjusted to reflect this change. The sunroof will continue to be an option (and included in the premium package) on the 2.4
- Additional Changes include: Dash Cupholder was deleted from Touring Package and not available from the factory

DSTC New Feature Introductions
DVD Volvo Navigation System - The Volvo Navigation System made its debut in the MY99 S80, and since it has been incorporated on most P2 vehicles. While a convenient and worthwhile option for many, improvements have been made to the CD-based system to improve customer satisfaction and ease of operation.
- The Volvo Navigation System (VNS) is an electronic information and route guidance system that helps the driver find any destination under a variety of options (e.g. shortest route, fastest time, use of highways and toll roads). The system keeps track of the position of the vehicle using the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system and automatically recalculates the route if the driver goes off the system’s plan.
- The most significant improvement of VNS was the incorporation of DVD media. The previous generation VNS used CD-ROM media to store maps and data. The advantages of using DVD media are storage capacity and speed. CD-ROM based VNS would require 9 separate CDs to provide coverage in the continental United States, whereas with the DVD format, only one disc is necessary for the United States and Canada.
- Route calculation, Data retrieval, and rerouting speeds are significantly enhanced versus the CD-ROM system.
- The size of the VNS display has increased by 1", measuring 6.5 inches. This color, wide screen unit is situated at eye level so it can be read easily and quickly. When not is use the display hides discretely inside the center speaker on the dashboard.
- In addition to the steering wheel mounted controls, a hand held remote will be included with every VNS ordered as a factory option. This remote allows passengers access to the system without having to distract the driver.
Interior Changes - New Color Introductions: 417 Nautic Blue – metallic; 427 Carbon Grey – metallic; 452 Black Sapphire – metallic; 604 North Sea Blue – solid. Please consult Color Chart for model availability
- New Interior: Graphite / Indigo Leather – Cloth Upholstery (T5 only: See Color Chart for Availability). This upholstery is identical to the Graphite/Sisal except that
- Leather Handbrake will feature a visible seam on the top of the lever.
 - Interior Switch for Fuel Lid – An interior switch will be added to 2.4T, AWD, and T5 models. Eventually, 2.4 models will receive switch as a running change this year. The switch turns off a diagnostic system that detects evaporation of fuel vapor. It is expected that this switch will help mitigate false reads and incorrect illumination of check engine lights. The fuel lid will automatically relock should the vehicle exceed 4 MPH.
