Volvo V60 Twin Engine. Model Year 2016
28 April 2015
The Volvo V60 Twin Engine with plug-in hybrid technology is an electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car all rolled into one. Volvo Cars now takes this ingenious solution to a wider audience by introducing a D5 Twin Engine Special Edition of its bestselling V60 D6 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. Both variants come with CO2 emissions (NEDC, mixed driving cycle for certification) of 48 g/km (1.8 l/100km).
Volvo Cars was the first carmaker to develop and produce a diesel-based plug-in hybrid powertrain with the launch of the V60 D6 Twin Engine in 2012. Now, the launch of the V60 D5 Twin Engine Special Edition broadens the range, which also includes the all-new Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine.
DESIGN
D5 Twin Engine Special Edition
The D5 Twin Engine Special Edition is delivered with Crystal White exterior paint, 19-inch wheels and glossy black exterior detailing. Inside, the car is equipped with a black headliner and piano black trim. The V60 D5 Special Edition will also feature the unique Blond sport seat upholstery with decorative white stitching as seen in our Volvo Ocean Race editions.
Just 500 examples of the special edition model will be built, while a regular V60 D5 Twin Engine will be more widely available in the spring of 2015.
Refined interior
Scandinavian design is exemplified by beautiful, simple shapes and surfaces with any unnecessary clutter removed. This is evident in the interior and exterior. Inside, the attention to detail, the authentic materials - such as wood and leather - and the easy-to-use controls contribute to the in-command driving experience. The rich interior detailing includes a Piano Black deco option, rotary jewel-like knobs in the centre stack and a frameless inner rear-view mirror.
Heated steering wheel
To give drivers in cold climate extra comfort, three-spoke steering wheels can be specified with electric heating.
Comfortable sport seat
Supportive yet comfortable seats that ensure a fresh and relaxed arrival after the longest of journeys have been one of Volvo strengths for decades. The buyer of the V60 Twin Engine can specify a sport seat that retains this traditional comfort and makes a perfect addition to the in-command feel of a true driver's car. It has great hugging side support all the way from the thighs to the shoulders, so the seat keeps the driver firmly in position when cornering at speed.
R-DESIGN
R-Design interior
The sport seat comes as standard in the R-Design. It features a blend of black nubuck textile and perforated leather. By blending inlays with a perforated look, black leather and contrasting stitching, the design team has created an R-design interior with all the details in perfect harmony, crowned by the black headliner.
CHASSIS & POWER TRAIN
D5 Twin Engine
The V60 D5 Twin Engine will deliver 163 hp via its five-cylinder, 2.4-litre diesel engine and 68 hp from the electric motor, which is powered by an 11.2 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack, using the same proven configuration used in the V60 D6 Twin Engine. This translates to a maximum driveline power output of approximately 230 hp when the electric motor and diesel engine are working simultaneously.
Three main driving modes
The driver selects the required driving mode via buttons that give the car entirely different temperaments: Pure, Hybrid or Power.
- In Pure mode, the car is powered solely by its electric motor as much as possible. The range is up to 50 kilometres.
- Hybrid is the standard setting whenever the car is started. The diesel engine and electric motor cooperate to achieve CO2 emissions (NEDC, mixed driving cycle for certification) of 48 g/km (1.8 l/100km).
- In Power mode, the technology is optimised to give the car the maximum possible power.
Save battery power for later
The driver can choose to save battery power in order to drive on pure electricity later on, for instance in an urban green zone or in the heart of a city. When Save is activated, the on-board system ensures that there is always sufficient charge for driving later in Pure mode. If necessary, the high-tension generator will charge the battery pack so there is sufficient capacity for driving in Pure mode.
Charge at home - cooling or heating in advance
The V60 Twin Engine can be recharged from a regular power outlet (230V/6A, 10A or 16A fuse) at home or in a parking lot. Recharging time varies with amperage. A full charge with 10A takes 4.5 hours. This is cut to 3.5 hours with 16A, while a 6A charge takes 7.5 hours.
It is also possible while recharging the car to heat or cool the passenger compartment to provide a more comfortable start to your journey. This also means that more battery power is available for actually propelling the car.
The pre-conditioning function can also cool the batteries if necessary. Cooling prior to driving is very important in order to maximise battery charge and thus also range.
The V60 Twin Engine has two heating systems. In electric mode the car uses a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) air heater. The car also has a diesel-powered heater.
Better pulling power with four-wheel drive (AWD)
Pressing the AWD button activates the electrical four-wheel drive. Instead of the mechanical power transfer of conventional four-wheel drive, the central control unit distributes power between the diesel-driven front wheels and the electrically driven rear axle. The electric four-wheel drive system has been designed as a traction system to provide better grip when starting and when driving on slippery roads, for instance in snow or mud.
When four-wheel drive is activated, the diesel engine operates continuously and the generator ensures that the charge level in the battery pack is sufficient to supply the rear axle with the necessary power.
Regeneration of braking energy
A two-stage braking system is yet another smart feature of the Volvo Twin Engine. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the system starts braking the rear axle's electric motor. The mechanical brakes are activated only when the situation requires more braking power than the rear axle can provide. The braking energy can be used to recharge the battery.
SENSUS
Sensus Connect
The Digital Display theme colours are also echoed in the connected infotainment system Sensus Connect. It features a refreshed user interface with a number of innovative functions offering customers a fully connected experience.
The cloud-based services allow the driver to find and pay for parking from the car, discover new restaurants at the destination, stream favourite music seamlessly and much more. The driver can also have text messages read out aloud without taking hands off the wheel.
The brand new app Connected Service Booking is only the first step in making the dealer workshop fully integrated into the digital eco-system. The car will not only tell the driver when it’s time for service but also suggest an appointment at the Volvo dealership.
The Bluetooth mobile phone service allows hands-free phone conversations as well as music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player.
Sensus - always on call
One of the most widely appreciated features related to the Sensus offer, Volvo On Call, allows Volvo drivers to communicate directly with their car via a smartphone application to lock, unlock, check fuel levels, pre-heat, pre-cool, locate and check mileage on the car.
For 2015 Volvo On Call will be updated, adding a completely new graphical user interface, enhanced send to car capabilities, diagnostics views and smartwatch support for Android Wear, Apple Watch, iPad support and also voice control via Cortana for Windows Phone.
Premium Sound system
The Sensus family also includes a top-of-the-line Premium Sound system with a 5x130W amplifier with the next-generation sound enhancement software Dirac Live and up to 12 loudspeakers, including a long-throw woofer for enhanced bass, soft dome tweeters for soft highs and large mid-range centre and door speakers.
With the Premium Sound system by Harman Kardon the driver can enjoy an immersive sound stage with improved bass performance, while being able to turn up the volume with full audio clarity.
SAFETY AND SUPPORT
IntelliSafe, Volvo's blanket name for all active safety systems, is an important part of the driver-centric approach in the V60 Twin Engine.
Permanent high beam with groundbreaking technology
The Active High Beam Control eliminates the need to switch between low and high beam. Instead, Active High Beam Control makes it possible keep the headlights on high beam continuously.
When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system helps to prevent dazzling of the oncoming driver by shading out only as much of the beam as necessary. This is done by an ingenious projector module mechanism integrated into the headlamp. The same benefit applies to drivers in preceding cars.
Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection technology
New advanced software, including more rapid vision processing, has made it possible to extend Volvo Cars' present detection and auto brake technology to cover certain cyclist situations as well.
The Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake is equipped with an advanced sensor system that scans the area ahead. If a cyclist heading in the same direction as the car suddenly swerves out in front of the car as it approaches from behind and collision is imminent, there is an instant warning and full braking power is applied.
The technology also detects if a pedestrian steps out into the road in front of the car. If the driver does not respond in time, the car can warn and automatically activate the brakes.
City Safety - active up to 50 km/h
The V60 Twin Engine features a City Safety system that is active at speeds up to 50 km/h. The car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops - or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast.
Cornering Light for better visibility
Another innovative option for driving in the dark is the low-speed Cornering Light feature. As an extension of the current Active Bending Light system, it lights up the area the driver is steering towards for safer manoeuvring.
Blind Spot Information System - for better visibility
The V60 Twin Engine offers the radar-based Blind Sport Information System (BLIS. The technology can monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles up to 70 m behind the car. Of course it still informs the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides.
Cross Traffic Alert - covering your back
Cross Traffic Alert uses the radar sensors at the rear end of the car to alert the driver to crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space. This is especially helpful in tight and crowded areas where the side view might be limited due to infrastructure, vegetation or other parked cars.
